Voici La Mode Ltd
Celebrating 50 of Marks & Spencer in Cyprus

5th November 2010

2010 marks the 50th anniversary of Marks & Spencer in Cyprus. Focusing on Social Corporate Responsibility and the Environment, Voici La Mode Ltd launched its 50 year celebration campaign, with a press conference held at the Artemisia Conference Hall on the 6th of May 2010, during which the Managing Director of the Group Mrs Artemis Antoniadou announced different initiatives and paid homage to the founder of the Group, the late Artemisia Panayiotou, without which as Mrs Antoniadou explained, «none of this would have been made possible».

Marks & Spencer offers stylish, high quality, great value clothing and home products, as well as outstanding quality foods. It is an international company with more than 1000 stores in 42 countries and 20 million people visiting their stores each week. Voici La Mode Ltd is one of the franchise partners of Marks & Spencer U.K. and has been a successful partner for the last 50 years. They own and operate 5 Marks & Spencer stores in Nicosia, including a Marks & Spencer HOME Store.

Τhe Group’s founder Artemisia Panayiotou was a dynamic, hard working visionary. She started her business in 1948 with a small store in Ledra Street (Nicosia) and for several years she was importing high quality fabrics from France and the U.K. In 1960 she made her first big step and closed an agreement with Marks & Spencer U.K. to import their products in Cyprus, at a time when ready-made garments were considered a luxury. This led to the opening in 1965 of the first Marks & Spencer store in Cyprus, at Makarios Avenue in Nicosia. For years she worked very hard to keep up the great standards of Marks & Spencer and was able to build a loyal clientele.

Through the difficult times that followed and after the Turkish invasion of 1974, the company was able to regroup and move forward with the culmination of all efforts coming down to the opening of the big Acropolis store in 1995. The opening of the Acropolis store is considered a landmark in the history of the Group, because the company was able to double its turnover.

During the press conference the Managing Director Mrs Artemis Antoniadou stressed how important is the loyalty of the Marks & Spencer customer and how this year the Group will honour them, by giving back to the community.

Plan A, the Marks & Spencer U.K. environmental plan, is a key feature in Voici La Mode’s events throughout the year. Plan A is part of the Company’s social corporate responsibility and the first step is an environmental campaign which benefits not only the Marks & Spencer customer but the community as whole. The campaign focuses on environmental tips and simple ways for protecting the environment. At the same time the Group plans to adopt a Green Area in Nicosia and cover the maintenance fees. Furthermore, the Group plans to donate more than €10,000 to Europa Donna Cyprus, while a great event marking the end of the 50 year celebrations will take place during October.

Lucky Winner of the «Lets keep in touch» competition!

As part of their 50-year celebrations, Marks & Spencer stores in Nicosia created a competition where each customer had the chance to win €500 worth of Marks & Spencer gift vouchers, simply by sending an Email to the company.

The draw took place on 2nd August 2010 and the lucky winner is Mrs Elena Loizou from Nicosia.

As part of its social corporate responsibility, Marks & Spencer – Voici La Mode signed an agreement on Wednesday 17th March 2010, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, for protecting the environment against climate change. This is the first of five steps that the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce & Industry has initiated in order to create a more social and environmentally friendly corporate culture.

Marks & Spencer – Voici La Mode is very proud to be part of this initiative. In fact the company is involved in an international project created by Marks & Spencer U.K., called PLAN A, with which they handle issues for the positive impact on climate change, on reducing waste, promoting the use of raw materials from sustainable sources, trading ethically and building a healthier lifestyle in general.
